September 27, 2016 (San Francisco) - San Diego State forward Travis Nicklaw (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Pac-12 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Aztecs to a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over crosstown foe San Diego on Sept. 25, as announced Tuesday by the league office.
With his award, Nicklaw, a redshirt senior, garnered the first weekly conference accolade of his career and became the Aztecs’ third Pac-12 Player of the Week honoree this season already, joining goalkeeper Adam Allmaras (Sept. 6) and forward Jereon Meefout (Sept. 13).
Nicklaw scored the golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime against the Toreros on Sunday. The tally was the second game-winner of the season for the San Diego native and University City High alumnus, whose penalty kick also helped sink top-ranked Akron on Sept. 2.
The victory was the Aztecs’ sixth shutout this season and raised the team’s record to 5-1-2 overall.
San Diego State, ranked 22nd in the latest NSCAA poll, opens Pac-12 play this week when it plays host to Oregon State at SDSU Sports Deck on Thursday, Sept. 29, starting at 7 p.m. PT. Following the Aztecs-Beavers match, the Scarlet and Black will entertain Washington on Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at noon. Admission is free to all SDSU men’s soccer home games.
