SDSU tops the Anteaters 4-3

January 29, 2017 (Irvine, Ca.) - San Diego State women’s tennis travelled north to Irvine, Calif., today to face off against UC Irvine where they edged out the Anteaters, 4-3.
UCI started the day with a win in doubles, as the Anteaters’ number one duo of Constance Branstine and Stephanie Nguyen took down Jana Buth and Taylor Lederman, 6-2. SDSU quickly responded, with Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz topping Cassidy Branstine and Jacqueline Tsodikova, 6-2, but UCI ultimately claimed the doubles point when Vivien Dvali and Stephanie Hazell defeated Berta Acero and Olivia Larsson, 6-1.
The Aztecs rebounded in singles play, as Diaz dominated Cassidy Branstine in the No. 3 slot, 6-0, 6-1, giving SDSU its first point of the day. Marina Colvee followed in similar fashion, downing Ashlynn Hall, 6-0, 6-1, in the sixth position. Davis held down the No. 2 position, notching a win against Irvine’s Dvali, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, solidifying SDSU’s third point. The Anteaters were still alive and fought back with a win in the No. 5 match as Hazell topped Acero, 7-5, 6-2. Nguyen then claimed a win against Larsson, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0, tying up the dual at 3-3. Despite Irvine’s bold effort, Buth held on to take the final victory against Constance Branstine, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, giving the Aztecs the win.
Now at 2-1, San Diego State prepares to face No. 18 University of Southern California on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles.
