Trojans sweep the Aztecs for second straight meeting

February 1, 2017 (Los Angeles) - San Diego State women’s tennis travelled north to Los Angeles on Wednesday, falling in a tough matchup against the No. 22 USC Trojans, 7-0. The Trojans also swept the Aztecs at their last meeting in 2015.
USC got off to a quick start, owning all three doubles matches. The second-seeded match was the first to finish, with Jessica Failla and Gabby Smith downing SDSU’s Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz, 6-1. Alli Valk and Mia Smith faced an uphill battle against Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes, falling 6-2 in the No. 3 slot. With the doubles point decided, No. T-27 duo Zoe Katz and Madison Westby finished off Jana Buth and Taylor Lederman, 6-2, wrapping up doubles play.
The singles matchups ensued in similar fashion, with the Trojans claiming the first match point as No. 52 Madison Westby defeated SDSU’s Smith, 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after, No. 56 Katz stunned Buth, 6-1, 6-2, and USC improved their lead to 3-0. Olivia Larsson was unable to find a way past Valdes, falling 6-3, 6-0. Though the Trojans claimed the match, the remaining singles contests finished up, with #46 Failla defeating Diaz, 6-1, 6-3, Gabby Smith claiming her match against Davis, 6-0, 6-3, and Kolikov disarming Marina Colvee, 6-3, 6-0.
Entering the weekend at 2-2, the Aztecs return home for a meeting with Cal Poly on Saturday, and another challenging dual against No. 8 California on Sunday. Each day of play will begin at noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
