August 10, 2016 (Colorado Springs, Co.) - San Diego State has once again been picked to win the 2016 Mountain West regular-season title as the league released its annual preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday. This is the fourth straight season in which the Aztecs have finished atop the poll.
SDSU, the four-time defending MW regular-season champions, recorded 119 points and nine first-place tallies ahead of second-place San José State, which garnered 102 points and the three remaining first-place considerations.
Rounding out the top five were New Mexico (90 points), Wyoming (84) and Boise State (80). Positions 6-12 went as follows: Colorado College (76), Utah State (71), UNLV (61), Fresno State (40) and Air Force (34). Nevada and Colorado State finished in 11th and 12th place, respectively, with 19 and 16 points.
The Aztecs, who have raised seven of the last eight Mountain West trophies (regular-season and tournament), return eight starters and 15 letterwinners of a 2015 squad that went 15-4-1 overall and 10-1 inside the MW. Additionally, San Diego State welcomes back 12 of its 13 players who recorded at least one point and six all-conference performers from last season.
SDSU will get the 2016 campaign underway on Friday when it faces San Francisco on the road. The friendly is slated for a 7 p.m. PT start at USF’s Negoesco Stadium.
