Rainbow Wahine claim doubles point, split singles in victory over SDSU

March 4, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's tennis team returned to the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday where the University of Hawai’i edged the Aztecs, 4-3.
The day began with close doubles competition, as Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma claimed the first doubles victory against Jana Buth and Paola Diaz, 6-4. A close contest between duo Olivia Larsson and Alli Valk, and Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova, ended in an Aztec victory, 7-6 (4). In a tight second seeded doubles match, Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith ultimately fell to Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova, 7-6 (5), and Hawai’i claimed the doubles point.
Moving into singles action, the Rainbow Wahine held onto their momentum for the top three seeded matches, as Melounova topped Davis, 6-2, 6-0, Nguyen defeated Buth, 6-2, 6-1, and Hruba grabbed a win over Diaz, 6-1, 6-2, giving Hawai’i the four points needed to win the dual.
In the final three singles matches, the Aztecs held on as Larsson took Nikola Dolakova to three sets, finishing off Hawai’i 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Berta Acero was also able to grab a victory on court No. 5, going three sets against Michelle Pits, 7-5, 2-6, 10-4. SDSU won the last remaining contest of the day as Smith battled to take down Resma in two close sets, 6-4, 7-5.
With today’s loss, SDSU heads into tomorrow’s match against Brown University with a 4-9 record. First serve against the Bears is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
