March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - SDSU baseball played for the sweep of their weekend series against the Mustangs of Cal Poly this afternoon.  Freshman Hayden Petrovick got the first start of his career for the Aztecs against sophomore Bobby Ay for the Mustangs.

Junior catcher Hunter Stratton broke the ice for the Aztecs in the third.  His leadoff double (and his first hit of the season AND the first double of his career) paved the way for junior second baseman Alan Trejo to hit another double to score him and the Aztecs took a 1-0 lead.

SDSU made it to the sixth unscathed, though not without a few brushes with danger. They finally added an insurance run in the sixth when senior shortstop Danny Sheehan’s grounder skipped off the opposing senior shortstop Brett Binning’s glove, allowing Trejo to run home from third and the Aztecs went up 2-0 and kicked Ay out of the game.  The Aztecs were able to carry that score for three more innings to complete the weekend sweep of the Mustangs 2-0.  Petrovick pitched four shutout innings with one strikeout in his first career start.

“I think our guys did a good job of commanding their pitches and keeping a pretty good offensive club off balance,” head coach Mark Martinez said. “It’s hard to win college baseball games and any time you can win three in a weekend is definitely a huge confidence builder moving into the next week.  He (Petrovick) pitched with a lot of trouble, but managed to get himself out of it.”

“I felt good,” Petrovick said. “I needed to execute the off-speed a little bit better, but I felt very comfortable once I settled in.”

The Aztecs have a day off before a night game against the USC Trojans at Tony Gwynn Stadium Tuesday night.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
