Aztecs fall short in four singles matches and two doubles encounters

September 24, 2017 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team completed its opening tournament of the 2017 fall schedule Sunday with four Aztec players participating in the Wildcat Invitational at Ventana Golf and Racquet Club.
However, SDSU found victories elusive, falling short in four singles matches and two doubles encounters on the final day of the weekend event.
Sophomore David Hough found himself in a tight battle with Tom Fisher of Northern Arizona in the ninth-place match of the Navy singles consolation bracket before running out of steam in a straight-set defeat, 7-6(5), 6-0.
Over in the Navy North consolation draw, fellow classmate Nicholas Mitchell was deadlocked with Grand Canyon’s Frederick Grant at one set apiece, but was unable to find his finishing kick, falling in a super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Similarly, freshman Jan Kirchhoff took an early lead against Arizona’s Shoti Meparidze in his Cardinal bracket consolation match for 11th place, but was could not close the deal as his Wildcat adversary prevailed in another super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-0, 13-11.
Meanwhile, over in the Cardinal South consolation draw, fellow newcomer Ignacio Martinez experienced a 6-3, 6-1 setback at the hands of New Mexico State’s Luis Flores.
The Aztecs also came up empty in the Cardinal doubles consolation brackets, with the tandem of Mitchell and Hough dropping a 6-1 decision to Fresno State’s Jeremy Moser and Cagatay Soke, while the duo of Kirchhoff and Martinez fell victim to the Arizona Christian pairing of Enzo Douilliac and Jesse Miritello, 6-3.
San Diego State returns to the court starting next weekend when it competes at the ITA All-American Championships Sept. 30-Oct. 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
